The candidate came to us with a rejected pre-submission draft, a Confirmation of Candidature 14 months overdue, and 12 months of scholarship funding left. Two supervisors had left the panel; the remaining principal supervisor had flagged the methodology chapter as the primary risk.
The examiner-facing risks were concrete: no audit trail for the qualitative coding, three research questions with only two aligned findings themes, and 218 references with inconsistent AGLC formatting.
The methodology chapter was rebuilt around Braun and Clarke's reflexive thematic analysis (2019 update) with an explicit reflexivity statement and a NVivo-generated coding tree presented as an appendix. The audit trail moved from a paragraph description to a table of 47 code-to-theme decisions with dates and rationale.
Findings were re-cut into three themes matched one-to-one with the research questions. The discussion chapter was rewritten using a claim, evidence, warrant structure so examiners could trace every argument back to the data.
Weekly 90-minute writing sprints kept momentum. A subject-matter editor with AQF Level 10 examination experience reviewed each chapter twice, once for argument and once for tone and citation integrity.
